Video Poker Glossary

The Game of Video Poker

Bet

An action a player takes pursuant to the rules of the game in which he places money in the pot so as to maintain a chance of winning that pot.

Cash Out Button

Every video poker machine has a cash-out button that enables players to withdraw any outstanding credits in the machine, credits (usually dimes) are dumped into the player's hopper.

Cashier

Refers to the cashiers cage in a casino where players can exchange their chips or dimes for money at the end of their gambling session, or likewise exchange money for chips.

Complete Hand

A term used to refer to the following hands, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, or a straight.

Credit

On a video poker machine credits are allocated or represents the cash value of the money cashed into the machine, for example on a 25 cent machine, 25 cents represents 1 credit so a deposit of say $10 will allocate 40 credits to the machine.

Deal

The deal button simulates the action of a dealer and distributes cards to the players hand, in the case of video poker, delivered to the screen.

Deuces Wild

A video poker game where deuces are wild cards.

Discard

On any given video poker hand you are able to select which cards you wish to hold by pressing the hold button located under each card, cards not held are considered to be discarded, to confirm this action you then need press deal once again to physically discard those cards.

Flat Top

A term for a video poker machine that does not have a progressive jackpot, meaning that the jackpot is a fixed amount.

Flush

A hand containing five cards in the same suit, such as 6, 7, 10, J, K of Hearts.

Four Of A Kind

A combination of four of the same cards such as four 10's or four Jacks.

Full House

A hand that has three cards of one denomination and two cards of another such as K K K 9 9 or A A Q Q Q.

Full Pay

Refers to the payback percentage or payoff schedule offered on a particular game, typically near the 99.5% mark. (strategy dependant).

Gambling

Refers to a action taken by someone in placing money down on an event with an unknown outcome with the hope of winning additional money, also referred to as a wager or bet.

Garbage Hand

A terrible hand of cards of no value.

Hold Buttons

On any given video poker hand you are able to select which cards you wish to hold by pressing the hold button located under each card.

Jackpot

Refers to a special bonus paid when the highest hand is hit on the video poker machine.

Jacks or Better

Two cards (jacks, queens, kings or aces) of the same denomination such as A A 5 10 K or J J A Q 6.

Maximum Credits

Every poker machine has a maximum credits button, to qualify for the big jackpots (payouts) it is recommended to play maximum credits.

Net Losses

The amount lost after deducting your original wager from your total winnings.

Net Winnings

The amount won after deducting your original wager from your total winnings.

Odds

The mathematical possibility of an certain outcome will happen.

Payoff Schedule

Every poker machine has a payoff schedule which is displayed on the front of the machine and shows the payout for each possible hand for the numbers of credits bet.

Payout

With video poker the payout occurs when the cash-out button is pressed, all remaining credits are directed to the player's tray.

Player

A term used to described a person who places bets (gambles) in casino.

Progressive Jackpot

Several machines are linked together and with each player bet on any one of the machines increases the jackpot amount, to win the progressive jackpot requires players to play maximum credits. Once the jackpot is won the jackpot is reset to it's initial starting value.

Royal Flush

The highest hand in poker and consists of the following cards: A K Q J 10 all of the same suit in any order.

Straight

Five cards in sequence from any suit, such as 6 7 8 9 10 or 8 9 10 J Q.

Straight Flush

This is a combination of five sequential cards in the same suit, such as 7 8 9 10 J of Diamonds.

Three of a Kind

A hand containing three cards of the same denomination and two unmatched cards, such as K K K 3 6 or 6 6 6 K 9.

Two Pairs

Two pairs of the same denomination cards such as 2 2 A A 5 or 6 6 10 10 Q.

Video Poker

Video poker is a casino game played on a computerized video display, similar size to a slot machine and based on five-card draw poker.

Wager

Also referred to as a bet is used to described the action of a player that places his money down, betting against the dice, cards or a casino machine for a desired outcome.
